Duke Of Edinburgh - Bronze practice expedition.

A group of 5 pupils from upper school have just returned from their Bronze D of E practice expedition.  It has been a tough 2 day trip for them but they have been fantastic and were all so well behaved!

Day 1: We left Merefield at 9.30am and headed to Moel Famau Country park to begin the journey to base camp at From Farm campsite.  They walked an impressive journey of 8.4 miles over some tough terrain while carrying their expedition kit of clothes, tents, sleeping bag, food and a Trangia (cooker). 

They arrived at base camp to set up their tent and cook a meal.  They even had enough energy left for a game of cricket before bed!  

Day 2: After a reasonable nights sleep the boys were up, washed, dressed, fed and packed up by 8.30am!! 

At 10.30am the group began their 2nd journey from base camp, through the village of Cilcain to the finish point of Loggerheads country park.  The promise of a huge ice cream at the end certainly kept them going throughout the day. In fact, everyone they past was told of the ice cream waiting for them at the finish line :) 

The group have done so well and we are so proud of them!  In 4 weeks time they will be going back to complete their assessed expedition.  This will be such a fantastic achievement.

Summer has arrived! As we start the final term of this academic year, thoughts are turning to Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, Sports Days, Summer Fairs and of course our OSCAR Celebration Evening to name but a few!

Merefield has been working hard this past year to develop all aspects of the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award and we are now awaiting external accreditation of all our achievements. This week we are participating in the UNICEF Day For Change event whereby everyone will wear non-uniform this forthcoming Friday May 13th in exchange for a donation. All monies raised by school will be sent to UNICEF and the government is going to match fund the UNICEF total. The monies raised will be used to support UNICEF's work with children caught up in emergencies around the world - especially the children of Syrian refugees. Some pupils will be attending a special assembly in school which will explain all about this very sad situation and how, by wearing non-uniform and giving a donation, we will actually be helping these Syrian children.

The redevelopment of the Playground spaces is making steady progress - after various discussions with several possible contractors we have come to a mutually agreeable decision regarding a plan and subsequent costings. Once we have the final plan we will create a display showcasing the plan so everyone knows what we are working towards.

Last Wednesday was the annual Wavertree Athletics Competition and a wonderful day culminated in a vast array of medals for everyone who took part - well done!

Next half term every class will be using a Roald Dahl story as the inspiration for their learning - just this morning I was introduced to Alfie the tortoise who will be the star of the show within Oak Class who of course are reading Esio Trot! This Roald Dahl theme builds upon our highly successful World Book Day which saw a variety of Roald Dahl characters around school bringing the stories to life for all our wonderful pupils.
